Welcome to the latest Club update.

This week we have suffered a home loss to Cove and an away draw at relegation threatened Chessington & Hook United.

For what it's worth, I felt we were unfortunate to lose to Cove. People who know me will know I am quite prepared to be critical when it is required as honesty is always the best way forward, but it just wasn't our night.

Meanwhile, the defeat enabled South Park to clinch the title with a win over Camberley Town and in a way it is fitting that they did it against their closest challengers. Congratulations go to all at South Park who are a very well organised group with a clear plan about where they are going.

With any chance of the title removed we put in a display on Saturday that can accurately be described as inconsistent. We were missing a couple of regulars, but the blameless Matte Pierson aside, everyone else had substantial first team experience and despite the platyform of a good start, we lost our way badly in the first half and were fortunate to go in level at the break.

In fairness to our players though, we were much better in the second half, although still managed to concede a late goal that was set up by a large punt into our area and I'm certain that our Management will be aware that this is an area that needs to be addressed next season if we are to compete on the field.

And next season looks like it could be a bit trickier as we anticipate the return of some very good sides from Step Four. As I write, it looks very likely that Guildford City will be joining us, while we will almost certainly be seeing two out of Ashford Town (Mx), Chertsey Town or North Greenford United, while we can't yet rule out the possibility of Fleet Town too.

How good will these sides be? Obviously it is hard to say at this stage, and the clubs that come to us will have all been relegated so you could argue that there is no issue. However, some of these clubs will be very keen to bounce back straight away and may even throw money at the situation to achieve it. This will obviously have a knock on effect for our club and it will be interesting to see what we do in terms of playing budget.

In the recent past we have agreed an amount with the caveat that if our League position isn't high enough in the New Year then it will be scaled back. I'm sure many clubs do something similar. However, we need to think ahead on this and need to be prepared to cut this budget much earlier than January if it looks as though a couple of teams are far too good and although that may not be a popular move, it is one that our people in positions of responsibility need to consider very shortly so that we do not waste much of the money the club still has.

We'll see whether that happens early next season. In the meantime, our first trip to Frimley Green for forty years awaits on Tuesday before we host the Champions on Saturday. It's a pity that there isn't more riding on the match, but I'm sure it will be as competitive as the previous seven, of which we have won six and drawn one. Hopefully we can keep that little run going.

Come on you Salts!
