2nd May 2016

Welcome to the latest Club update.

It's all over. Another season, our 98th, has come to an end and all in all, I think the future is bright at Epsom & Ewell FC!

Our final two matches resulted in a home 0-1 defeat to Ashford Town (Mx) and a 6-1 away win at Chessington & Hook United. Both were contrasting performances with the same starting eleven and of course much relevance is attached to the respective quality of the two teams we were playing; Ashford who were chasing promotion, which they achieved, and Chessington who were already relegated and concentrating on a Southern Combination Cup Semi-Final which was to be played just 24 hours after our League match!

On Monday we either set, or extended a few club records, and the most significant of these was our final points tally of 86, our highest ever. We also won more points and scored more goals away from home than we had ever done before. There are still questions to be asked about our home form, which was outshone by our away form for the sixth straight season but it is impressive to note that we only lost on three grounds all season. Chipstead obviously, Stag Meadow, Windsor FC and Gorings Mead, Horsham FC. That in my book is pretty impressive.

When you throw in some of the goals we have scored this season, I cannot think of a previous season in my time at the club where we have scored so many brilliant ones. All season they have been flying in from all angles, either with great free kicks, or great moves or great individual finishes. I could list an enormous number of really special ones, although at the top has to be the flying overhead kick by Matt Ferdinando on 26th September which fittingly was the only goal of the match at home to Farnham. It was the best goal I have witnessed as an Epsom and Ewell fan and I've seen one or two!

There is no way of escaping the fact that we were in a big battle with three other teams and at the end of the day, Hartley Wintney have won the League, Ashford Town have won promotion and Camberley Town are hot favourites to retain the League Cup this Saturday against Farnham Town at Windsor FC while we have come away empty handed. However, it would be really harsh to call the season a failure, as I doubt there were many out there who genuinely believed we could have finished in the top four in the first place. Our seventh place finish last season was good, but I don't imagine anyone had us pegged for anything other than a top half finish at best. We have been quite brilliant at times and I firmly believe that disciplinary matters have led to our finishing position. If we can get them under control next term, and keep the same squad, I believe we will be battling all the way for the title next year. So, no pressure then!

I hope you have enjoyed reading these Editorials over the season. They will now revert to monthly issues and the next one will be concentrating mainly on our June trip to Chantilly for a match against the home town club. In the meantime rest assured that we as a Committee will not be resting and continue in our efforts to secure a new ground for the club back in the Borough. Things are moving positively on that front at present and a simple phone call from one party to another could give us exactly what we are looking for. It could be that close!

Have a great summer and don't forget to keep looking in for news about next season's fixtures and cup draws. Also, you heard it here first, England will have a good tournament at Euro 2016. Must go, it's time for my medication!

Come on you Salts!
