14th December 2015

Welcome to the latest Club update.

A sign of a good team is one that wins even when they are not on their best form. Saturday's win at Badshot Lea was important, not just because our three points kept us up with the leaders, but because the desire within the team was strong enough to see us through on a day where we didn't play as well as we can.

There were a number of reasons for this. We still have many players out, and while Kyle Hough started up front, he is still troubled by the injury he picked up at Ashford in October. We also came up against a Badshot Lea team who had recorded some good recent wins against Bedfont Sports and Hartley Wintney, coincidentally the last two teams that we failed to get a win against. On a heavy pitch and a blustery day we still had enough quality to get the win and move on.

We have two matches remaining in this calendar year and both are tough ones. We host Sutton Common Rovers on Saturday and go into the match with seven straight wins against our opponent. However, they are playing well right now and recorded a fine win at Eastbourne Town on Saturday to reach the last 32 of the F.A. Vase. In striker Francois Gabbidon they have a player in fine form as his hat trick on Saturday proved. We will have to keep him quiet.

Then on Monday 28th December we face a morning kick off at Horley Town. We went into that match on the back of six straight wins last April but still lost narrowly and we will have to be at the top of our form if we are to win there. Horley are one of the five teams that can win the League this season, although recent second half slip ups resulted in a 3-3 draw at Ashford after being 3-0 up and a 3-2 defeat at Windsor after leading 2-0, so are in danger of slipping away from the top four who all continue to win, although I am still scratching my head at how we are not second today, after Ashford went behind at Guildford, then had a man sent off, missed a penalty, and still scored three times in the final six minutes to win 3-1! It just goes to show that you can take nothing for granted in this league.

To finish off this week's bulletin I must explain the situation relating to the sudden home postponement against Cove on Tuesday last. Cove were unable to fulfil the fixture and the matter is now in the hands of the League Committee who will make a decision in the New Year. Cove have defaulted on two occasions now and have been given a couple of weeks off by the League in order to reorganise after what has been a terrible first half of the season.

Cove are due to restart their fixtures on 2nd January. If they don't, then of course expulsion from the league would be the only alternative. If they are able to get going again, and there's every indication that will be the case, then we will find out the League's decision on our match, probably by the end of January. Historically though the matches have been awarded to the oposition with a 0-0 scoreline so that is my expectation, although we may be asked to play again. We'll let you know as soon as we know!

Come on you Salts!
