9th November 2015

Welcome to the latest Club update.

After a two week break from competitive action, we secured all three points against Chessington & Hook United on Saturday, but it wasn't easy and players and supporters alike had to remain patient before Tom Neale scored our winner in the 89th minute.

It wasn't our greatest performance as we struggled to break through against a team that had defeated us 1-0 in our previous three home meetings, and just like in those previous contests, the opposition rarely looked like scoring in the match. However, a disallowed goal, a great shot against the post from Matt Ferdinando and a number of good saves from the visiting keeper Ian Hewitt kept them in it.

The goal itself had an element of fortune as it came from a wrongly awarded throw in after Neale had done so well to prevent a long ball going out for a corner, and whilst the referee said he was unsighted, just one look at the players body language would have told you which way the decision should go. Anyway, from the throw in, Matt Tanton produced a top class delivery from way out on the touchline and Neale got to it first. Game over!

So we are now up to third place in the table and whilst Hartley Wintney keep on extending their winning sequence it is hard to look at a title challenge. However, it is nice to be around the top sides, and I will go as far as to say that even at this stage of the season there are only five teams that can win this title; Hartley obviously, Ashford, Camberley, Horley and ourselves. This obviously makes for a more interesting remainder of the season, as we remain in just the one knockout competition but there are some questions on the horizon.

Firstly, when will leading scorer Kyle Hough and pivotal defender Dan Dean return to fitness? I am assured that neither are too far away, which is important as we now face some tricky matches. Secondly, we have some tough games coming up. On Saturday we travel to Knaphill and looking at the league table would be an error here as they are definitely going to finish higher than the midtable position they currently occupy. They pushed Hartley all the way recently, narrowly losing 1-0 and remain in the F.A. Vase so we will face a tough challenge over there. It is of course the ground where Glyn Mandeville had his first match in charge of the club, when we won 4-1 back in September of last year. A repeat would be nice though!

Then we face the biggest test of the lot as we travel to Hartley three days later and follow that up with a home game the following Saturday against another top side in Hanworth Villa. On that subject, Dale Marvell has left our club and is now once again a "Villain" scoring against Hartley in his first game back on Saturday. We wish him well.

Finally, I can announce that we have had a second winner of our Salts Super Six Predictor competition as Maggie Beddoe got all six correct to claim a very nice £297! Whilst it would be great to see the jackpot rising to a massive sum, it is also healthy for it to be won now and again, just to prove that it is possible to do so, and it will be back in action against Hanworth Villa on 21st November.

Come on you Salts!
