Welcome to the latest Club update.

We have only one match to report on this week when on Saturday we travelled to Sutton United, the temporary home of Sutton Common Rovers for a League match. The recently installed 3g surface looked very nice, but the ball held up quite a bit in the heat and hampered any attempts by either team to play any real flowing football which was a pity as it was a very competitive match.

We came away with a 2-1 win, although that doesn't really tell the full story. We deservedly led in the first half through Matt Farrell but were pushed back more in the second half and a draw would probably have been a fair result. However, we preserved all three points thanks to Michael Eacott on his fiftieth appearance who saved an 86th minute penalty from former Salt Jay Holden. Whether the penalty should have been given is another matter entirely as the player ran the ball out of play and on realising this, then bounced of the stationary Dale Marvell and fell theatrically to the ground. Additionally, we could have had our one penalty at the other end for a pull back on Reisse Griffin just ten minutes into the second half. It is possible that the pull back was outside the area but if it wasn't a penalty, there should at the very least have been a red card and if either of these things had happened, we wouldn't have been under so much pressure afterwards.

Of course this game is about opinion and I was only one of many watching the game and admittedly from a different angle to the officials but shirt pulls are easy to spot in those circumstances as even if you can't see the pull (which most did) the player straightens up unnaturally and suddenly gets caught up by the defender that previously was trailing in his wake! All I know is that if their Management team had been on the receiving end of the two contentious decisions we wouldn't have heard the last of it!

It was good to see two former members of the Epsom goalkeeping union Tony Webb and Dave Tidy both watching the game. I would remind all former players that you will always be made welcome at our club if you wish to come along, even those who happen to be playing for the opposition that day!

We have no midweek fixture so our next appearance is at Westfield this Saturday for a League match. Both clubs went out of the F.A. Cup and have identical records in the League with two wins and a draw from three matches, so it should be a close one, which is just as well as our two previous visits to the refurbished Woking Park were 3-0 and 4-0 defeats! That said, it is probably the nicest actual Step Five ground in our League after Windsor and if you've not been before then please come along and support the Salts!

Less than 48 hours after this we host Raynes Park Vale with the traditional Bank Holiday Monday 11.30 a.m. kickoff, which enables many people to watch another game later in the afternoon. Why not come on down to High Road and see if we can move higher in the fledgling League table?

For obvious reasons next week's editorial will be released on the Tuesday.

Come on you Salts!
