Epsom & Ewell 1-3 Eversley & California - Dave Wilson Trophy Semi-Final - Tuesday 23rd July 2013

Visiting Eversley progress to the final and provide a lesson to Epsom about taking chances

Although Epsom played more of the football in this match, especially in the last hour of the game, Eversley & California scored three times to seal their passage to the Dave Wilson Trophy on Tuesday at Colliers Wood United.

Epsom were continuing to miss some of their regulars with Ben Hayward, George Murphy, Kyle Hough, Antony Myers, Dale Marvell and Robbie Burns all absent. Russell Hart parttnered Anthony Panayi at the back while Ali Dewar returned after missing the win at Arundel as did Karl Doughlin.

The game started slowly but evenly until a free kick from just outside the box after 18 minutes beat Kieran Campbell to his right. Rhys Jackson was unfortunate to be flagged offside, just as he delivered his header into the net after 30 minutes but this seemed to raise Epsom who finished strongly. Dewar clipped the ball over the bar from a low Jarman cross two minutes later while Mark Jarman sent a header just inches over the bar from a Jamie Hatfield free kick. Before half time Dewar again shot straight into the arms of the keeper from close range and the half ended with Jarman blazing wide from a good position.

The second half didn't start well. The visitors had the ball in the net after 54 minutes but were ruled offside after a late flag. Minutes later though Campbell was in action again, diving at full stretch to keep a low shot out but the reprieve was temporary and the lead was finally extended after 59 minutes.

Nathan Ayling reduced the arrears within a minute ith a shot into the top corner from quite a way out, and as we pushed for an equaliser, substitute Alex McGregor had a free kick tipped over before a number of chances came our way. Doughlin was unfortunate when his shot was deflected wide and after 73 minutes Jarman rose well to send a header off the inside of the far post, the follow up from Ayling was then saved for a corner.

Unfortunately the visitors struck on the counter attack after we didn't clear the ball very well and a low shot from the edge of the area beat Campbell to his left after 82 minutes, and McGregor's low shot was also kept out as we ultimately ran out of time.

The lesson to learn from this is that we need to take our chances, especially while our main strikers from last season are absent, or it could be a long season.
